My name is Erin Morton and I am the Project Manager for the RAPID-TnT clinical trial currently being conducted in the RAH ED under emergency consultant Dr Cynthia Papendick, and Prof Derek Chew (SALHN Cardiology Network director), as well as at TQEH, FMC, and soon Noarlunga.
I am writing to enquire about the possibility of hiring medical students to enrol patients in our study at RAH. We know similar work has been done by Adelaide Uni casual med students at CALHN before and as the course coordinator I was hoping you were the person to speak to about potentially setting something up for our study. We have recently created a similar effective arrangement at SALHN for Flinders Uni med students via a request for expressions of interest & attachment sent out by the appropriate year level course coordinator (responses to be directed to myself as per the italicized example further below).
We would be looking to hire a small group who could work in tandem with the nurses on the study (to enhance coverage of extended hours, leave etc), to enrol patients with chest pain and take samples for troponin testing at baseline and 1-hr, or simply follow standard care. As such, the students would need cannulation skills at a minimum, and some understanding of ECGs would be advantageous, but to be clear they would not be responsible for patient clinical care. (Our Flinders Uni equivalents are 3rd year post-grad.) We would of course train the students in the requirements of the study, and we would ideally like a small pool of them to work as casuals so as not to detract from their studies and also increase the chances of someone being available for us at a given time.
If you could please consider my request or perhaps forward it to the appropriate year level course coordinator it would be greatly appreciated. I will try recontacting you next week to discuss and/or answer any questions you may have.
