Adelaide Students' Society of Critical Care

2015 Events

MedCamp First Aid Training - March

  • With our annual appearance at MedCamp we like to get in early and introduce first year students to the field of critical care medicine after their first week of medical school
  • The basic first aid skills we teach are designed to provide a platform for future critical care education whilst equipping first year students with some essential practical skills early on in their medical training
  • Our simulated stations include a car accident, snake bite, alcohol poisoning and near-drowning - providing invaluable, hands-on experience to kick-start the long road that is medical education

MedFooty Emergency Medical Challenge - May

  • Set against the back-drop of the annual MedFooty game, the Emergency Medical Challenge is a unique opportunity for students to practice their critical care skills in realistic, high-pressure, team-oriented scenarios
  • Within a specific time limit, teams are required to respond to 6 different emergencies complete with simulated patients and all of the appropriate medical equipment
  • Teams receive valuable feedback after each scenario, and the event is adjudicated by experts in the critical care field – including Medstar and emergency medicine consultants

Critical Care Skills Night - May

  • With the help of our educational partner, the Adelaide Health Simulation and Skills centre as well as guests from the critical care field, including consultants, registrars and ambulance officers, we run various stations aimed at teaching students valuable critical care skills
  • Each visiting health professional teaches small groups of 6-7 students – making these nights highly sought after by medical students, with limited sports available for registration
  • Stations include
    • Basic life support
    • Management of cervical spine
    • Management of tension pneumothorax
    • Intraosseous access

Airway Skills Night - August

  • Critical care doctors give up their night to teach small groups of students basic airway skills
  • Hosted by our major educational partner, the Adelaide Health Simulation and Skills Centre, and supported by Medtronic-Covidien, this is an event not be missed
  • Stations include
    • Basic airway manoeuvres
    • Supraglottic airway device insertion
    • Endotracheal intubation
    • Surgical cricothyroidotomy – featuring our unique, self-designed models to give each student hands-on practice

5th year mock OSCE - October
