First Year

O’Week is a once in a life time opportunity; your first introduction into university life, to the Adelaide Medical School and to the Adelaide Medical Students' Society (AMSS).

The AMSS invites all First Years to the Student Societies Expo between Monday the 20th and Thursday the 23rd of February.  The Expo will run outside the Old Medical School on Frome Road from Monday to Wednesday and at the New Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building on Thursday the 23rd following the compulsory orientation.

AMSS First Year Welcome Forum on Monday 20th February from 11:00am in Hone Lecture Theatre in Medical School South on Frome Road.  It is a perfect opportunity to hear about life at Med School and the AMSS, as well as meeting your new peers and some of the older students and collect a FREE Showbag full of goodies.  Come to the Expo afterwards enjoy the carnival atmosphere and grab yourself a slushie, some fairly floss or a soft serve.

As well as the Welcome Forum, various workshops will be run on Monday and throughout the week – see the full timetable at the bottom of the page.

What’s On?

Pump yourself up from from day dot with Blood Pressure tutorials courtesy of the Adelaide Medical Students’ Foundation on Monday the 20th of February.  Learn about scholarship and grant opportunities available through the Foundation which runs purely to benefit medical students.  Or, get your eye in with Otoscopy Workshops from the General Practice Student Network.  Learn about General Practice Pathways, events and opportunities.

If you’ve forgotten everything about first aid? It’s OK, take 2 breaths! - The Adelaide Students’ Society of Critcal Care (CritCare) will be hosting Critical Care Stations on Tuesday the 21st of February.  Students will have the opportunity to try their hands at CPR, Basic Airway Skills and Intramuscular injections (on models – safety first).  Find out more about CritCare events throughout the year and chat to older students over a free lunch.

Got cut out of brunch plans by a classic stich up? Pull yourself together! - The Adelaide University Surgical Society will be hosting a suturing workshop and Welcome BBQ on Wednesday the 22nd of February. Students can get an insight into suturing in a fun and supportive environment as well as treat themselves to a snag. There will also be free medical dictionaries and free coffee available.

If you think these puns have been pushing it – the Adelaide University Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society is also around on Wednesday the 22nd of February, hosting O& G workshops. Hear more about events and opportunities in O & G by joining a workshop or chatting to older students.
