The AMSS's events are the highlight of the calendar year, and here is your chance to get involved, have a great time, and make some amazing connections within the AMSS.

Functions Convenors

Avg. 3-5 hours per week
Skullduggery is the AMSS’ premier O’Week party, welcome to all; both medical and non-medical students. This event has seen a few modified versions since COVID in 2020 and it is a great blank canvas moving forward for a team who loves to build on traditions. It is the convenors' job to organise, market and run the event, there is potential scope to get other societies and the Adelaide University Union involved as well.

It is a fantastic event to convene and is really in need of a huge boost next year to re-instate it’s huge name coming off a year hiatus. You can let your creative juices flow in terms of venue, music and design facets, you don’t necessarily have to have been to a Skullduggery to be the best convening team for the job!

A bit of background about the last couple of Skullduggeries- Also check out the skullduggery website https://www.skullduggery.org.au/!!
2018: Held at the old HQ on Hindley St, large attendance with great drink specials and a DJ
2019: Also held at the old HQ, major good vibes
2020: Held on Math Lawns at main university campus in conjunction with the AUU, major focus on bringing great musical acts- Confidence Man and Alice Ivy
2021: More casual held at main university campus, an afternoon event with food trucks and music

Skullduggery is an event that has so much creative potential and future convenors can explore new ideas. Running a smooth event requires motivation, organisational ability, creativity and offers opportunities to upskill in budgeting, marketing, contract writing and intersocietal professional communication. Because the event is in O'Week, the majority of work is done during the summer holidays and in the previous year.

As with all AMSS Committee positions, the Skullduggery Convenor(s) are expected to attend all AMSS meetings (approximately 6 per year) and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].

The Skullduggery Convenor(s) sit on the Committee as a General Officer, hence does not hold a vote at Committee Meetings.

Individuals may apply for this position, although it is recommended that nominations are for a team of up to four members.

This position will be elected by the Executive and prior convenors. Nominations typically open in July/August each year.
Most time requirement during O Week, then the summer holidays, then work done the previous year
  • Event finishes before the pre-clin academic year starts, so there is little to no overlap with uni
  • Lets your creative juices flow
  • Get to meet new people and work with amazing helpers and the exec
  • So much fun throughout!
  • Upskill in event organisation, teamwork, contract writing, and working with multiple organisations e.g. University Union (now rebranded to YouX), Unibar and event hire businesses
  • Skullduggery is the main for-profit event in the AMSS calendar, so budgeting can be stressful
  • An event that is losing establishment in the AMSS calendar
  • Limited event venues due to lack of huge capacity venues in Adelaide
  • Time commitment in summer holidays - may be hard if both convenors are not in Adelaide, at least one is fine, however these days email correspondence is sufficient for most things
  • Other societies have begun creating their own parties which compete with Skullduggery
This position is not elected at the AGM.
Ideas for the future
  • Explore new themes and venues
  • Music act
  • Finding ways to make this event more appealing to non-drinks
  • Optimising the Skullduggery website

MedCamp is the best weekend of the year! It's a great experience to be a part of and the best way to kick start your involvement with the AMSS. Make mates with first years, helpers and exec, get to attend at least one exec meeting, 10/10 upskilling (event organisation, AMSS website skills, promotion, budgeting, sponsorship, leadership, self control), find out who does the best alcohol quotes for your 21st, get to wear walkie talkies etc.

As with all AMSS Committee positions, the MedCamp Convenor(s) are expected to attend all AMSS meetings (approximately 6 per year) and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].

The MedCamp Convenor(s) sit on the Committee as a General Officer, hence does not hold a vote at Committee Meetings.

Individuals may apply for this position, although it is recommended that nominations are for a team of up to four members.

This position will be elected by the Executive and prior convenors. Nominations typically open in September each year.
Pre Christmas 3-4 hours/week, January 5-6 hours/week, Pre O-week and O-week 20 hours/week
  • Plan the best event on the AMSS calendar! (Convenors may be biased)
  • Learn loads about event planning and management
  • Eat whatever you want from the kitchen
  • Make awesome mates with other convenors/helpers/exec
  • Relaxing weekend at picturesque Normanville
  • First years think you're cool (at least for a bit)
  • Prep time doesn't really overlap with term/doesn't inhibit studies
  • Can't drink over the weekend
  • Relatively big responsibility
  • May have to miss Womad

Ideas for the future
  • Increase accessibility and appeal of the weekend for a broad range of people

Being one of the biggest events in the AMSS calendar, Jazz Night is a magical event to bring your event vision to life. This event brings together the vibrance of Adelaide nightlife, the energy of jazzy student bands and a non-stop d-floor.

It is a fantastic event to convene due to the fact that you get to work with enthusiastic helpers, you can let your creativity flow and you just end up having so much fun with your fellow convenor/s!

You will be responsible for every aspect of the event, with support from the Social Officer and general Committee. Running a smooth event requires motivation, organisational ability and creativity. It offers opportunities to upskill in budgeting, marketing, contract writing, risk management and professional communication. A new era of PresKeg has emerged, and we are looking for convenors who have a vision to continue traditions and make this an inclusive, exciting and unique event!

With the number of attendees growing, this event has become unmissable, and a fantastic opportunity to organise an epic venue, music acts, sound and lighting, food and drinks and a chance to get to know some of the best helpers.

You will be responsible for every aspect of the event, with support from the Social Officer and general Committee. Running a smooth event requires motivation, organisational ability, creativity and offers opportunities to upskill in budgeting, marketing, contract writing, risk management and professional communication.

MedBall is arguably the biggest event on the AMSS calendar with the biggest budget, and therefore can be intimidating but is also a unique event experience. You can be as creative as you would like from the theme to the food, to the room, to the table settings. You have to be confident in meetings and negotiations with the big venues, as well as being efficient with emails.

The MedBall Convenor(s) will liaise regularly with the Social Officer, and as General Officer(s) of the Committee are expected to attend AMSS committee meetings and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].

Individuals may apply for this position, although it is recommended that nominations are for a team of up to four members.

This position will be elected by the Executive and prior convenors. Nominations typically open in September following the AGM each year.
Generally busy leading up to MedBall, can be a pain with ticketing
  • Gain event management experience
  • Helps build admin/organization skills which will be applicable as a junior doctor
  • Build relationships + work closely with executive members (yay new friends!)
  • So rewarding to see all your hard work pay off on the night (proud mum moment)
  • Lots of work in the weeks leading up
  • Sometimes need to be firm with clients/venue to make sure you aren’t being swindled
  • Have to be available on the night if issues arise
This position is not elected at the AGM.
Ideas for the future
  • Due to the large-scale nature of the event, the convenor(s) must be aware of and be able to deal with uncertainty arising from changing COVID-19 restrictions.
  • Opportunity to improve ticketing portal/organization of tickets (upwards of 800 patrons with specific dietaries is tricky to manage + could be optimized)

MedRevue is a parody show that seeks to entertain the student body, doctors, other health professionals, and non-medical audiences. It usually takes the form of a "medical" take on a theme, for example Med Girls 2019's performance.

As convenor(s), you will have oversight over a diverse range of responsibilities, including:

- Script-writing and thematic formulation
- Auditioning and Casting
- Costuming/Props
- Stage effects/Photography/Videography/Recording
- Coordinating large ensembles
- Recruitment of ancillary groups, e.g. Backstage and Front of House
- Venue and A/V hire
- Sponsorship
- Marketing
- Financial Budgeting

The way you approach these is flexible, and often involves delegation of tasks to other leaders in your production. Be aware, however, that the final responsibility will rest with you. MedRevue convenorship is a fun and rewarding experience but in order to be successful, key tasks (such as venue hire) must be completed in a timely manner.

The production is not-for-profit, and proceeds go towards philanthropic aims. This year we have supported an AMSS initiative, the APY Exchange Program.

As with all AMSS Committee positions, the MedRevue Convenor(s) are expected to attend AMSS meetings and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].

The MedRevue Convenor(s) sit on the Committee as a General Officer, hence does not hold a vote at Committee Meetings.

Applications are open to individuals and teams.

This position will be elected by the Executive and prior convenors. Nominations typically open in September each year.
Time requirements increase significantly towards the final date, be aware of this when committing to this role.
  • Great creative outlet
  • Enjoyable and rewarding
  • Development of leadership and organizational skills
  • Development of technical and design skills
  • Liaison with a large group of keen and enthusiastic peers
  • Significant time commitment
  • Overall responsibility for tasks that aren't always your area of expertise
This position is not elected at the AGM.
Ideas for the future
  • Approach sponsors EARLY

Convening APY is one of the best ways to get event experience, make connections between year levels and give back to the Australian community.

There are typically 3-4 AMSS APY Exchange Coordinator(s) per year. These coordinators organise the program and logistics together, and then act as independent community leaders, leading their teams to a community within the APY lands. Ideally, these coordinators will have volunteered on the program before or been on a similar programme. We suggest this as the program is quite unique and an ongoing relationship with the NPY Women’s Council is important.

As with all AMSS Committee positions, the APY Exchange Coordinator(s) are expected to attend AMSS meetings and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].

Individuals may apply for this position, although it is recommended that nominations are for a team of up to four members.

This position will be elected by the Executive and prior convenors. Nominations typically open in September-October each year.
- Jan - April (Only occasional emails, O-Week lectures & application process) - April - July (On average 3-6 hours per week of emails, logistics planning, pre-departure planning sessions with volunteers or cultural awareness training) - very manageable to split between the group - July - October (On average 1-3 hours per week of further planning) - July and October Program are typically 10 days duration: coordinator acts as leader & mentor for their group of 3-4 other volunteers
  • Opportunity to build connections with like minded students in other year levels
  • Leadership experience
  • Cultural awareness opportunity
  • Opportunity to upskill with event planning, activity organisation, budgeting, sponsorship, 4 wheel driving (you get to learn many skills in the one role!)
  • Opportunity to build connections in Indigenous health- hugely rewarding!!
  • Majority of the role is completed by October (leaving the last part of the year to concentrate on studies)- might even be completed by August if all trips go in July!
  • Logistics can be difficult and unpredictable (have to be very flexible to last minute changes with scheduling + activity planning)
  • Need to be organised (bookings need to be done early + liaising with NPY Women’s Council happens very early in the year) (peak organisation around May - July, during pre-clinical exams)
  • Need to be flexible
This position is not elected at the AGM.
Ideas for the future
  • Continue groups of 5 with 4 trips (20 participants in total)
  • Room to continue to run 4 trips in July if September/October pre-clin holidays don’t line up with school holidays
  • Build and establish more opportunities for other medical students to engage with local Aboriginal health programs, e.g. local health clinics
  • Further cultural awareness training

EdForum (n); where education meets entertainment in an after-hours lecture or workshop.

Convening EdForums is a great way to get involved with the AMSS and build on your event management experience. There is scope for 1-3 EdForums run throughout the year on any topics of your choosing! The role involves coming up with ideas, contacting potential speakers, organising catering and room hire as well as coordinating event promotion. Edforums are an opportunity to get unique presenters in to create interactive sessions that stand themselves apart from normal lectures as they are often about important social issues, topical issues or interesting healthcare endeavours.

As with all AMSS Committee positions, the EdForum Convenor(s) are expected to attend AMSS meetings as a General Officer, help out at AMSS events and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].
One hour per week per convener. Typically, the workload increases when approaching the forum date, after which there is a lull with little to no activity required.
  • Highly rewarding in that you get to liaise with key figures in their respective medical fields
  • It’s quite rewarding to see important topics being brought to light through Edforums
  • These events are often both entertaining and informative and continue the important educational work that is a pillar of the AMSS
  • Wide scope of topics (medical and non-medical) to choose between - lots of freedom to talk about current, interesting and relevant topics
  • Boosting attendance is a big challenge due to EdForum's after-hours nature and requires careful selection of speakers and persistent marketing of upcoming forums.
  • Often hard to get positive speaker responses and requires adapting topics you have in mind / being quite flexible!
This position is not elected at the AGM.
Ideas for the future
  • Potential to develop smaller break-out sessions, where smaller groups have a more interactive session with each speaker
  • Potential to have a skills night rather than lecture format to further boost attendance (and hands on audience involvement)

Inter-Year Debating has seen crowds of 300 people in the past few years, earning recognition as an unmissable event on the AMSS calendar. This event is looking for some passionate convenors with a vision to tackle the newfound scale of the event and continue to build upon the momentum from previous years. It is a fantastically fun event - brainstorming topics and working with the teams is a hilarious task, and the scope for creativity really is just whatever makes the event more fun.

Running a smooth event requires motivation, organisational ability and creativity. It offers opportunities to upskill in budgeting, marketing and professional communication.

The Inter-Year Debating Convenor(s), as General Officers, are expected to attend AMSS meetings and write an article for the Society's major publication, [stimulus].

Individuals may apply for this position, although it is recommended that nominations are for a team of up to two members.

This position will be elected by the Executive and prior convenors. Nominations typically open in August-September each year.
Avg. 3-5 Hours per week leading up to the event Organising begins ~1.5 months before the event.
  • Small time commitment over the year
  • Excellent way to be introduced into event convening
  • Unique event with fantastic scope for creativity
  • Get to work with a lot of passionate students
  • Tight budget - likely will be expanded next year
  • Need to be passionate about the event - writing debate topics and advertising requires quite a few creative decisions
  • Communicating with old scholars for judges can be tricky - needs to be organised proactively
Ideas for the future
  • Old scholar vs All stars debate
  • Medical School Staff vs All stars debate
  • More sponsorship for the event
  • An epic AP
  • More crowd involvement
